Published by , on August 3rd, 2011, in the categories: cell phone accessories

iPhone owners are often worried about protecting their phones against scratches and the best thing to do this is by applying a screen protector on the surface of the screen. These screen protectors come in various shapes and sizes, each one specially developed for a certain phone model. Some screen protectors offer only protection against accidental scratches, while others also offer anti-glare features for people who tend to use their phones in extreme lighting conditions. In this article we’ll take a look at the screen protectors specially designed for the iPhone 4, by Boxwave, a company that specializes in all sorts of solutions for the protection of mobile phones.

Currently, they have two screen protector models made for the iPhone 4, each one of them being designed for a certain category of users. The first is the ClearTouch Anti-Glare screen protector. This protector has two main functions: to increase screen visibility in intense sunlight and to protect the phone’s screen from scratches. The company advertises this product as being the perfect blend between anti-glare and optical clarity. This means that unlike many other products, this screen protector will not interfere with the picture’s clarity when applied. In the same time, it will protect the screen of the phone against scratches. If you choose to buy this product from the manufacturer’s website, it will cost you about 12$ if you buy the single pack, and double the price if you buy the 3 pack bundle.  Each package comes with a special card you can use to apply the screen protector correctly and a special microfiber cleaning cloth that you can use to clean the screen without the risk of scratching it. This pack should also have dust repelling capabilities and it shouldn’t allow for fingerprints to be seen on the surface of the screen. This last feature is also much desired by iPhone users everywhere. The cleaning cloth that comes with the package is washable and reusable so you don’t have to worry about buying another one after a period of use.

The second type of screen protector is designed only to protect the screen from scratches and it’s called the ClearTouch Crystal. It’s called Crystal because it’s said to offer a crystal clear picture by keeping the full color vibrancy. This one also has the same price and the package includes basically the same stuff as the previous.

BlackBerry 7100 Phones

Published by , on August 2nd, 2011, in the categories: Blackberry

Because today’s topic is related to old BlackBerry devices, we’ll take a look at another old cell phone model, the BlackBerry 7100. Actually, the 7100 model has about 5 versions and we’ll take a look at each version separately so you’ll know what to look for if you’re interested in such an old device.

Released in 2004 and 2005, these BlackBerry models have one thing that sets them apart from other BlackBerry phones. They don’t have the omnipresent full QWERTY keyboard that made BlackBerry so famous. Probably because the models are older, instead of the full keyboard, these models have a particular type of keypad, something between the regular keypad that you can find on a phone and the full QWERTY keyboard that represents the brand. Each key has two letters designated to it, which means you don’t have to press three times on a key if you want to type the last letter that appears on that key. This makes typing a bit faster than on regular keypads, but not as fast as with a QWERTY keyboard.

The five versions I’ve mentioned earlier are the X type, V type, T type, G and I models. These phones look mostly the same with small design differences. Some of them have a more classic shape, while others look like something dropped from an alien spaceship. The I model has an antenna that makes the phone look sort of old, but this components should help with the signal reception of the device.  The screens of all the models have about 2 inches in diagonal, which means the display has a decent size, that can allow for decent resolutions. This good resolution can only be used to view pictures, downloaded from the internet of copied to the phone’s memory via the USB cable, as neither of the phones has a camera.

Connectivity-wise, they all have Bluetooth and the above mentioned USB port that you can use to connect them to a computer. Other features include the 32 megabyte memory they have, a memory that cannot be upgraded, as none of the models has a card slot.  One of the best features on these phones is the battery, as it can allow for up to 5 hour conversations, which is great if you handle a lot of business on the phone. These models probably don’t cost very much, so if you’re looking for a museum phone, or just a phone you can use for talking and texting, it might be worth checking them out.

Blackberry 8830 World Edition

Published by , on August 2nd, 2011, in the categories: Blackberry

BlackBerry phones are known all over the world for their ability to perform in business related situations and all their phone models are design in a way to make sure that any businessman will easily use the phone as a personal assistant in situations where mobility is a must. Today we’ll take a look at an older BlackBerry model, the 8830 World Edition, a cell phone that can still be used today without any difficulties for simple tasks.

Released in April 2007, the phone is still available today as many users prefer it for its functionality, combined with the low costs it involves. Initially designed for Sprint, the 8830 World Edition works well on both CDMA and GSM networks, which means it can be used all over the world as long as it has the roaming service active. Another solution would be an unlocked version of the phone, which would allow the user to buy prepaid SIM cards from any operator they want, depending on the situation.

When it comes to design, the BlackBerry 8830 is in perfect accordance with the classic BlackBerry shape, the full QWERTY keyboard being present for fast typing and easy navigation on the web. The 2.5 inch screen has only 65k colors, but that should be enough for the tasks this phone can perform. The navigation through the menus is made easy by the integrated trackball that acts as a joystick and the keys are laid out in an ergonomic manner to allow for fast typing.  The size of the phone is normal for a BlackBerry and even if it’s an older version, it cannot be cataloged as being too large or too heavy.

This model runs a BlackBerry OS operating system, powered by a Qualcomm chipset processor and 16 megabytes of RAM memory. The 64 megabyte storage space can easily be improved with the use of a memory card that will store all the apps and other files that a businessman might use. The operating system allows for mp3 files to be played and it integrates a lot of business related apps, such as BlackBerry maps, an organizer, a document viewed that can be used to open most office type files, and a media player for audio and video files.

Finally, the phone doesn’t have a camera, but that’s probably because back in 2007 it was considered that businessmen don’t need a camera on their phone, especially because there were many situations where they weren’t allowed to enter with any sorts of recording devices.

Android OS For Nokia Cell Phones

Published by , on August 1st, 2011, in the categories: Nokia

Unfortunately, lately Nokia has been going through a rough patch and their popularity on the mobile phone market has decreased considerably. While back in the day the phones from Nokia were considered to be among the fastest and the toughest, these days Nokia hasn’t come up with anything that could match the leaders of the cell phone market, like Samsung or HTC.

Recently, Nokia representatives have come to realize that their downfall is imminent and that they have to do something quick until it’s not too late. In some press conferences, they started dropping hints about a new line of mobile phones that will soon invade the market. These should catch up with the competition and launch Nokia back to its initial position. Speculations have started and most people guess that the new phones will most probably run an Android operating system, which would keep them competitive in terms of speed and most importantly price.

Recently, some Nokia enthusiasts have made something magnificent as part of a project called NITDroid. The developers of this project have created a compatible version of the Android operating system that is able to run on some of Nokia’s internet tablets. The result is a device that has the exterior of Nokia device and the brains of Google’s Android.

First tests of this new platform were made on a Nokia N810, using the 1.6 version of Android. All the basic Android apps seemed to work, so the developers took it one step further. They have created a stable version of Android 2.2 Froyo for the Nokia N900, which usually comes with a Maemo operating system. They were able to make calls, data and Google apps run on the hacked device, so far, the only component incompatible being the camera.

With this performance, the NITdroid project had varying degrees of success. Until this point, the hacked operating system has been tested on Nokia N770, N800, N810 and N900. Among these, the most successful seems to be the N810 where everything is functional but that’s because the tablet cannot make phone calls so everything was kept more simple.

Nokia mobile phones that run Android are not yet a certainty, but for those willing to try out the operating system on their tablet, a step by step guide has been written to facilitate the process.

Android Nexus Dev Phone Specs

Published by , on August 1st, 2011, in the categories: Android

Android Developer phones are special phones, designed for Android developers, and their purpose is to help the testing process of an applications creation.  These Dev phones are software and hardware unlocked devices which allow the developers to test their newly created apps for any type of phone that will run an Android operating system. Because they are specially created for developers, these phones can’t be purchased by anyone. Developers who want such devices have to sign up for Google’s developer program, this way receiving these special phones. The most popular developer phones for Android are the ones made by Google, called Nexus. In this article we’ll take a look at Nexus One and Nexus S and tell you all about the features these devices incorporate.

First is the Nexus One. Released in January 2010, this developer phone is great for testing purposes, but not only. The capacitive 3.7 inch touchscreen will allow you to navigate easily the web and the locally installed applications. It has all sorts of cool features, like multi-touch, accelerometer and a proximity sensor. These components are very useful not only for regular users, but also for developers, as they help them create applications with a higher level of complexity. For instance, if a developer wants to make an application that uses the accelerometer, like a game, the testing process will be limited if he uses a computer. Computer emulations are fine until a certain point, where the integrated components most Android phones offer are a must. The phone also has a powerful 1 gigahertz Scorpion processor and 512 megabytes of RAM memory, which will allow the developer to test his apps at a maximum capacity.  If someone wants to develop apps that use the phone’s camera, the Nexus One is great as it has a 5 megapixel camera that can be used to take all sorts of pictures, improved by the potential software a developer can create for it.

The Nexus S model is a more recent developer phone model. This one is slightly bigger and it has some technical improvements over the previously described model. The screen is made out of curved glass, the processor is a bit faster and the Android operating system version this one has is two versions newer than the one found on the Nexus One.
