IPhone 4 vs. BlackBerry Torch

IPhone 4 is the best phone from Apple so far, but is it the best on the market? Now, we are going to compare it to a worthy contender – BlackBerry Torch 9800. We are going to compare them from a number of aspects including the design, the performance, the operating system, the features and the price.

The design of both phones is decent but BlackBerry is a bit bulkier because underneath the touchscreen a QWERTY keyboard slides out, adding some millimeters to the thickness. Also BlackBerry tends to be more rugged, while iPhone is very in touch with its feminine side.

The biggest similarity between the phones is the camera, both of them carrying a 5 MP camera that can take decent pictures. The video camera on the other hand is much better on iPhone because it can film HD, while BlackBerry’s only captures at 24 fps, at low resolutions. Also, BlackBerry is unable to make video calls as it lacks the secondary camera. Come to think of it, the phones are very much alike when it comes to standard features, so from now on we are going to highlight the differences, more than the similarities.

Regarding the display, IPhone has a slightly larger display and a higher screen resolution, the difference being about 0.30 inches. They use different technologies for the screen, iPhone using LCD and BlackBerry using TFT, but considering they are both multitouch screens with proximity sensors, the difference isn’t noticeable.

Another difference between the phones is the internal memory. While iPhone has 32 Gb, BlackBerry has only 4Gb, upgradable to 32 using a memory card. A big plus for iPhone is the additional microphone used for noise cancellation and the extra sensors like compass, gyroscope, and accelerometer.

In terms of battery life, they both have Li-Ion batteries, but BlackBerry has only 5.5 hours of talk time and iPhone has 14 hours. The odd thing is when it comes to the stand-by time, because BlackBerry can stand-by for 400 hours, 100 hours more than iPhone, in 2G mode.

Another big difference between them is the price. If we look up the prices at the same carrier, we can observe that  the difference is quite big, as iPhone costs between 199 and 299$ depending on the internal memory and Blackberry only costs 49$.
